This morning I came across an article about the proposed Mosque to be built in Temecula while looking for the article I wrote about a gold buying company, which I'm pretty sure is totally shady. Anyways, I read the article and it was unanimously approved. I also can't read a controversial article without reading some of the comments at the bottom. This is another rant I have. I'm guilty of it too, and that is how I know this happens. Witht the ability to comment on news stories more people are reading and analyzing the comments rather than the actual news story; this is probably not a good thing. What did I come across, but my all time favorite saying, "This country was found on Christianity...period" Well there are just so many things to say to this. Well, first off, things change. I'm not saying that the country was Christian and now it's changing, but I don't see how anyone can think that what worked 300 years ago will work now. Secondly, the puritans who came over looking for religious freedom were Christains, but they didn't found the country. The founding fathers were not Puritans, as Puritans aren't heavily political. Thomas Jefferson was a Deist and took the stuff out of the Bible that he didn't like. However, that is quite similar to modern Protestantism now isn't it?
There are all sorts of religious intolerance in our country, but clearly, the most current issue is that of Islam becoming a part of America. Let's just start with this quote from the article: "The teachings of Islam pose a sharp philosophical contrast to the beliefs of his congregation." Tough nuggets. That is all I have to say to that statement.
Yes, there is a thing called Jihad. Yes, it is a violent ideology. Yes, it is an ideology agains those who don't believe in Islam. But really, a mosque is a breeding ground for terrorists? I read an article a few months back that intolerance is what breeds terrorism. The article suggested that if people are denied the freedom to practice religion –– more specifically –– Islam, some are more likely to turn to extremist groups who make them feel thir culture is valued. And there were many commentators speak with such surety that Muslims believe in annihilating all Non-Muslims. Do they know that from studying the religion or is it something they heard from people like my grandfather and those on Fox News.
It's not uncommon though to deny some people of their rights because of irrational fear of what may be born out of it. Sort of like the argument that if we allow Gays to marry it will only lead Pedophiles marrying children. Sure let's deny rights because there is the miniscule chance something bad may happen.
I'm a Christian and in all honesty, I probably am because of the country I grew up in. I also have to try to hard to be who I am while making sure I'm not lumped in with those who believe things like "America is a Christian nation... period." If this was an entirely Christian nation, I would leave.
