"Let's go get the shit kicked out of us by love. "

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere."

I wanted to be in my living room since the Christmas tree is all lit up. Reading wasn't a good option because to be next to the light I have to face away from the tree. I also didn't feel like wrapping presents yet; I bought several today. A Christmas movie seemed like the best option; even though I would be looking at the TV most of the time I still turned to glance at the tree every now and then.

The only Christmas movie we have on DVD is Love Actually, but having only seen that one once before, and loving it that one time before, I with great joy, sat down in our Scandanavian designed chair to watch it.

Despite not being so happy about the idea of love currently, I couldn't do anything about the smile on my face. I even limited myself to two dark chocolate mini-Reeses, so I don't think sweet had anything to do with my hapiness.

Since Point Loma makes us take these ridiculous personality tests; whatever, I wasn't doing anything important with the summer after I graduated high school other than watching the World Cup and teaching the occasional swim lesson. I still don't know what the school planned on using this information for except for people to put at the end of their emails, but my first strength was connectedness. Which is, however, undeniably valid. Whether or not things are coincidence, fate, meant to happen, have a particular purpose, it doesn't matter to me I love life's little connections. I also love stories, and as much as I may grumble I love love, so there are already three of my favorite things rolled into one movie.

Other reasons why I think this movie is great: the line "How many lobsters where  there at the birth of Jesus," a slew of wedding guests playing/singing The Beatles, red headed little boys playing the drums and writing "rhythm is my life" on their bedroom door chalkboard, the song "Jump for my Love" and Hugh Grant dancing to it, actors such as Emma Thompson, and Liam Neeson, adorable British/Portuguese lovers, that the Collin is excited to go to Wisconsin, and really just everything about the movie.

It's not a complete chick flick, not everyone is happy in the end, but everyone knows that someone loves them, which is essentially hapiness. I just hope that I never forget the hapiness of being in love or knowing there are people who love me.

  1. I've seen this movie at least 20 times, and I put it into the DVD player at the slightest provocation. In fact, I plan to watch it again within the next day or two, now that I've read your post.

    Other highlights:
    - Olivia Olsen singing the Mariah Carey Christmas song.
    - Natalie's family.
    - Billy Bob Thornton as POTUS.
    - The Prime Minister's driver joining in (with his terrific voice) for King Wenceslaus.
    - Learning Portuguese, and English, "just in cases."
    - Joni's slow version of Both Sides Now.

    Ever do weddings?
    Yes I do.
They should have asked you to do this one.

God I wish you hadn't turned it down.
    I didn't.
