Weddings

I love being married.  It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.  ~Rita Rudner

Since March, most of my weekends have involved some aspect of campaigning. Last weekend, I had a pretty good excuse to skip the campaign festivities: I had two weddings to attend.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gumm
In less than 5 years I have been to 11 weddings, all for either high school or college friends, and I will add that I'm not even 25 yet. For most people my age, I'm an anomaly, but for an alumna of a Christian University, I'm pretty average.

This past weekend, was the first time I actually got to be in one of the weddings. I've heard horror stories of being in weddings. Luckily for this one the bride, who happens to be my other half and college roommate, couldn't be a bridezilla even if she tried, and she let us pick out our own dresses.

I'm not a fan of messing with wedding registries, or making purchases at Crate and Barrel, but I love everything else about weddings. I love getting dressed up, I love dancing, I love being told I'm a great dancer by my friends' weird uncles, I love crying during the ceremony, I love crying during the Father-Daughter/Mother-Son dance, I enjoy the free meal, I enjoy the speeches. I will also add that about half of these 11 weddings have been dry, which is what happens when your friends are Nazarene or Mormon, but I even enjoy those weddings too.

Though our modern culture doesn't regard marriage as it once did, I still believe in its importance just the same. Marriage has evolved to hold a new connotation amongst my demographic: the young educated career-driven women is supposed to be able to make it in this world without a man. That is wonderful and all, but I think being a self-sufficient woman actually gives new meaning to marriage. To me it shows the essence of marriage: love. Without the need to get married for stability further supports the sanctity of marrying for our innate longing for companionship and love.

Sometimes, as someone who is single, it can be a little difficult watching everyone around me fall in love and make new lives with their husbands, but it really just gives me something to look forward to.
