Yesterday morning on my way to church I tuned into “Breakfast with the Beatles.” Though I like not living very far from church so I can catch the last of “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” before having to leave, I was sad I had to cut Fiona Apple covering “Across the Universe” short.
I have been a “Breakfast with the Beatles” listener since I was little, though then I listened to it with my dad on K-Earth 101.1 and now I listen to it on The Walrus 105.7. I claim to be a Beatles enthusiast, though I will say this before I get too much grief for writing this, I don’t know everything about the band, and I don’t think I do.
That said though, I have an opinion to express. People who think they LOVE the Beatles and can barely name what songs belong on which album, and just a hint, 1 isn’t an album, are really annoying.I have received snide comments when I say that I don’t prefer The Beatles over The Rolling Stones. The reason I say that is because it’s true, but The Beatles vs. The Stones if for another blog post. I have discovered that people (and by people I mean people my age) who think they are really cool because they love The Beatles more than someone else can get over themselves. These are usually the people who also think listening to the “Across the Universe” soundtrack constitutes as worshiping the Fab Four.
Now I’m not saying that I can tell you which album every song is affiliated with, but I could hold my own if I were challenged to do so.
I also have a leg up on many kids my age. For one thing, my parents were not blessed with child as early on in their lives as many of my friends’ parents, so they are more of the Beatles Generation, and my dad is what you would call an obsessed Beatles fan. At the age of eight I was already stealing my parents Revolver album; my favorite song was “Good Day Sunshine.”
On the other end of the spectrum, I have friends who hate The Beatles. Notice that I’m kind enough to still call them my friends, though it’s hard sometimes. However, I will take an all out Beatle hater over a pretentious fake Beatle lover any day.
