Struttin her stuff

This cartoon is cute, I'm guessing not very realistic. Wilderness and high heels, yeah don't think so.

I looked through all the photos on my computer to see if I could find one where I'm wearing heels, not one. To my roommate Melanie's wedding I wore wedges, but those are not heels. I realized that at every high school dance, graduation, and wedding I've been too; I always wore flats.

I think the reason being is that heels not only suck, they are also intimidating. At least for myself.

Today I wore a pair of hybrid heels and wedges. They aren't wedges because the heel gets narrower. Anyways, I will say I did a decent job walking around the hills of Loma at graduation today, but my feet really hurt by the time I got back to my car. Will I wear them out dancing tonight? I'm still thinking about that?

Maybe I don't like high heels because I didn't grow up playing dress up with my mom's; purely because she didn't really own any. My mom is very tall, my dad is only a few inches taller, and it wasn't like they went too many places to get dressed up for anyways.

Through most of my high school years, I wanted to be taller. I stopped growing before I thought I would, and my grandma and her two sisters always made comments about how I didn't get the Windgard legs. If that term doesn't mean anything to you, it's because they are talking about the extremely long legs that come from my great-grandfather's side of the family. My grandma, her sisters, and my mom all have them. Proportionally speaking, my legs are very long, but I'm also barely 5'4.

Even though I wanted these so-called Windgard legs because they seemed to be the most important thing to everyone, except for my mom, I still had no desire to wear heels to make myself seem taller.

Once I got over my height; I went through a very stubborn phase of never wanting to wear heels because they were just too girly. I liked dresses, and fashion, but heels to me just screamed, "Hey look at me I'm a high maintenance girl." For my senior year homecoming dance, my mom had to force me to where something with a little bit of a heel.

Now, I've entered this new phase in my life, where I have to wear professional clothes and try to make myself look like an adult woman. The reason my height makes this an issue is because nice woman's clothing is expensive, and when I find anything on major clearance I try to get it. However, the skirts often don't fit and slide down to my hips, and sort of of swallow my small frame. So, the only option is to wear heels to balance out the issue.

Also, as a journalist, especially at City Hall, I like to have a bit more of a presence. I need to be able to command attention, and not look like a 12-year-old.

This is where the intimidating part comes in. I want to command attention, but not because I look like a rooster as I walk into a meeting. Then there is always the question, are these heels too tall for work or are they too flashy? I just can't win. And what about all the noise they make as I walk through a building; do I want to be THAT girl who clicks everywhere she goes.

I have done some reading on heels. Men wore them originally; think Louis XIV and all those other wig-wearing bourgeois French men. For women they were a hit because they force our boobs and behinds to stick out.

Now women have podiatry problems up the wazoo; however, it's said that walking in flats isn't any better for your feet. So, my feet are straight up screwed.

Maybe I will kill a snake one day with my high heels.
