Yes, yes, yes, I was a little late on the whole get a song in during the first week; I failed.
iTunes shuffle chose for me this time: "Out of Egypt, Into the Great Laugh of Mankind, and I Shake the Dirt from My Sandals As I Run." Coo, the name of the song is going to be longer than the blog.
This has always been one of my favorite songs by Sufjan Stevens. I did discover Sufjan Stevens on my own; however, it was a little later than some, but as usual I was a music pioneer among my peers.
My favorite song was "For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti." Where is Ypsilanti, you ask. Hell if I know. That same year I watched the "Invisible Children" documentary and cried my eyes out to this song. Damn that Invisible Children for capitalizing on our guilt and making Toms shoes fashionable.
Back to the other one, the one with a really long title. That is my favorite now. Anytime I listen to it, I picture it being played in a low-budget artsy film. One where the camera is looking at a girl driving in a somewhat smallish suburban town in the early morning summer sun, watching her every blink. That kind of describes many of my summer mornings, so that is probably where that idea comes from.
I listen to it now though and realize there's nothing special about it. It almost has an amateurish quality. I feel like someone could have made it with Garage Band, but it still sends chills up my spine and despite it's buildup, it melts my stress away.
Bravo Sufjan; you've met my criteria for good music. If I can get lost in a song, it's good. The next song to follow on my iTunes shuffle is The Rolling Stone's "The Lantern," but that is for another day.
